Since we're being cheap this year, one giant pot of black beans, Mexican Styles, roughly following this recipe, should be sufficient for three meals; enchiladas, refried bean tortillas, and breakfast burritos. For another dinner we can do stew with dumplings, parsnip mash and peas.

Produce:

  • 3-4 lemons
  • 6 oranges
  • 1 kg onions
  • 2 bulbs garlic
  • 250 g parsnips
  • 250 g turnip/swede/rutabaga
  • 250 g carrots
  • 250 g celery
  • 2 red peppers, unless it's ludicrously expensive
  • 1 bunch of parsley (stew)
  • 1 kg bag salad greens (sandwiches, burritos, tortillas)
  • fresh tomatoes (for salsa, sandwiches)

Groceries:

  • 1 kg black turtle beans
  • 3 kg tin tomatoes
  • 3 kg tin sweetcorn
  • 1 catering pack of kransky sausages (just in case)

Regular Supermarket (or MW if all at once)

  • bread
  • 1 dozen tortilla
  • 1 dozen burrito bread (or another dozen tortilla, sure whatever)
  • milk
  • 500 ml cream (for hot chocolates)
  • 1 l yoghurt
  • 500 g cheese
  • 1 dozen eggs
  • frozen peas
  • Whittaker's Dark Cacao (62%) chocolate
  • pick one: suet, lard, or butter (for the dumplings, preference in that order!)
  • sandwich fillings - e.g. mayo, tinned salmon, deli ham, vegemite, shit, etc.
  • chips, lollies, ice-cream, M&Ms, etc.

Preston's (Porirua)

  • 1.2 kg cheap stewing beef - blade chuck or brisket
  • 1.2 kg chicken breast/thigh
  • definitely no offal, since we won't be having haggis
